Ground Combat Uniform 24 (MSU24)

A combat uniform, also called a field uniform, battledress, or military fatigues (Swedish: fältuniform), is a casual uniform used by the military for everyday fieldwork and duty, as opposed to dress uniforms for formal functions and parades. In British English, battledress is often the preferred name. In February 2023, the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) signed an agreement to purchase a new combat uniform system together with Finland, Denmark, and Norway. The Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Danish armed forces have jointly entered into an agreement to procure a common uniform system. The uniform will be suitable for use by all branches of the armed forces in all four countries during exercises and operations, both nationally and internationally. The agreement is the result of the NCU project (Nordic Combat Uniform)—which has been carried out within the framework of the Nordic cooperation NORDEFCO. The technical specifications for the NCU system will be the same throughout all four countries. Helmets, gloves, boots, and personal protective equipment are not included in the uniform system. The Nordic countries will now have a modern, functional, and flexible combat uniform system to meet the needs of their soldiers in the harsh Nordic climate. The only element that will distinguish the uniforms when they arrive in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden is the camouflage design, as each country will maintain its own camouflage scheme. The Swedish camouflage pattern on MSU24 is largely reminiscent of the pattern on the former Swedish combat uniform m/1990, but the pattern is slightly smaller in size. The uniform system can be used in different configurations depending on the activity, weather, and climate. The outer layer of the combat jacket and trousers consists of a flame-retardant material that protects the wearer from burns. Furthermore, outer garments are composed of advanced materials that resist moisture. Underwear and base layers are made of merino wool, which allows moisture to escape and helps regulate body temperature. So, the MSU24 is a complete combat uniform system, from underwear to reinforcement garments, which are designed to withstand extreme cold and are suitable for both men and women. The MSU24 also has sewn-on knee pads. The image shows the sewn-on knee pad on the MSU24. Photo: Victor Hilding, Swedish Armed Forces. Rank insignia, national insignia, unit insignia, and service insignia/training insignia are worn on the rectangular patch on the sleeve of the uniform. At a ceremony in December 2024 at FMV's headquarters, Tre Vapen on Gärdet in Stockholm, FMV handed over the new uniform system, Markstridsuniform 24 (MSU24) [Ground Combat Uniform 24], to the Swedish Armed Forces. The first complete uniform systems will be distributed to Swedish units in 2025. One of the first units to be equipped with MSU24 was Göta Engineer Regiment, T 2, which took place in May 2025. Even though the new uniform is now being gradually introduced, the Swedish Armed Forces' existing combat uniform, m/1990, will remain the basic uniform for all personnel who do not serve in combat positions, i.e., for all those whose main duties are in staff and garrison administrations and similar. The MSU24 is a distinct field uniform and is intended for the Armed Forces' combat units.

Service Dress Uniform m/2026

Service dress uniform (Swedish: Daglig dräkt) is the informal type of uniform used by military, police, fire, and other public uniformed services for everyday office, barracks, and non-field duty purposes and sometimes for ceremonial occasions. The previous service dress uniform, m/1987, has been in use for nearly four decades and is being replaced with a new one. As a result, in 2022, FMV began developing a new service dress uniform for the three branches of the armed services. In the fall of 2023, the first two trial models were delivered for evaluation. The Army is evaluating the color of the fabrics, brown shoes, and the use of belts. At the same time, the Air Force is evaluating a lighter fabric, black shoes, and gloves. The army uniform will be a greenish shade. Overall, the updated material selection in m/2026 (m/26) is of higher quality than in m/1987; among other things, the jacket is made of wool and the lining is viscose instead of polyester. Not only are the jacket and skirt designed specifically for women, but so are the shirt and trousers. The new service dress uniform will not be introduced before 2028, when the entire basic organization will be equipped with Ground Combat Uniform 24 (MSU24), as the introduction of this uniform is a priority.
