Roll Keeping Area Code
Identify the roll keeping area code part in the enrollment number. This code is next to last in the enrollment number, just in front of the slash. For example, if we have the enrollment number 137 6/08, the roll keeping area code is 6.Use this code as a starting point in the chart below. Browse the chart until you find the desired code in the column marked “RO”. To the right of the code in the chart you will find the name of the roll keeping area and the name of the enrollment area the roll keeping area (local draft board) belonged to. In this example we have the code 6 which is Helsingborgs rullföringsområde (Helsingborg Roll Keeping Area) which in 1908 (08) belonged to Malmöhus norra inskrivningsområde (Malmöhus Norra Enrollment Area).
The Enrollment Numbers 1902 - 1942
Between 1902 and 1942 military enrollment numbers (draftee service codes) were noted in the form SSS RRR/YY where SSS is the conscript’s personal serial number in the roll, RRR is the roll keeping area (rullföringsområde) in the enrollment area and YY the year of enrollment of the conscript. For more information About the enrollment numbers. The chart below has the following information in respective columns:•RO = Roll Keeping Area Code (rullföringsområdesnummer, RO)•RO namn = Name of the Roll Keeping Area (rullföringsområdesnamn)•RO period = Time period of the Roll Keeping Area •IO namn = Name of the Enrollment Areafor a specific Roll Keeping Area (Inskrivningsområdesnamn)•IO = Enrollment Area Code (inskrivningsområdesnummer, IO)•IO period = Time period of the Enrollment Area Some enrollment areas were closed down in 1927 and these areas have no enrollment area codes. The chart below therefore has the area code zero (0) for these enrollment areas.Example: if we have the enrollment number 137 6/08 we can, in the chart below, find information that this draftee was drafted at Helsingborg roll keeping area, 6, (Helsingborgs rullföringsområde), [Helsingborg draft board] which in 1908 (08) belonged to the Malmöhus North Enrollment Area (Malmöhus norra inskrivningsområde). In other words, use the roll keeping area code (RRR) of the enrollment number, in this example 6, as a keyword and browse the “RO” column (first column) in the chart below to find the name of the roll keeping area (column: RO namn) as well as the name of the enrollment area (column: IO namn) for area code 6.It is important to know the name of the enrollment area in order to find a draftee in the military rolls. Most likely a draftee did his military service in a regiment within the enrollment area where he was drafted/enrolled. You can find further information about a draftee (conscript) by researching the military enrollment rolls (inskrivningslängd) for the roll keeping area in question. Thereafter he can be searched for in the so-called stamrulla (a military service roll) for more information about his military service. However, in 1918 the stamrulla was replaced by the new stamkort/värnpliktskort (draft cards). There was a draft card for each draftee. These new draft cards contained personal information about the draftee as well as notes about his military service. When the new stamkort was introduced in 1918 the old conscript rolls (stamrulla) were converted to the new draft cards for the men drafted prior to this year (but still of draft age). Men were liable for military service from their 21th birthday (from 1914 their 20th birthday) until their 47th birthday (from 1942). Above, page 1 of a draft card (värnpliktskort) for a draftee assigned to the infantry (infanteriet) [Section 2 above]. The draftee’s name is Johan Anton Bergwall, born in 1894, and drafted in 1914 (section 1 above). His enrollment number was 497 72/1914. He was drafted at Piteå rullföringsområde (72) [draft board] which belonged to Norrbottens inskrivningsområde [Norrbotten enrollment area].Section 5 above contains information regarding when the draftee had served on duty; year (år), duty (tjänstgöringens benämning) and number of days (antal dagar). He did his military service in the Norrbotten Regiment (I19). In section 5 above there is a column with the heading “Reg:t, station osv”. This column contains information about the unit’s name. In this case I19, which is the unit code for the Norrbotten Regiment (Norrbottens regemente). This regiment were garrisoned in Boden town, Norrbotten. "I" is short for Infantry and I19 means the 19th infantry regiment.More information about each unit’s code can be found at: Unit codes (förbandsnummer).Further, Bergwall served in the 3rd Company; information that is found in the next column with the heading "Komp., skv., batt. osv". Number “3” stands for 3rd company.Source; the above image can be found at: Norrbottens inskrivningsområde (Io 19), Piteå rullföringsområde (Ro 72) D4:3 (1914-1922) Bild 7770 (AID: v806614a.b7770, NAD: SE/KrA/0473/B19002Ö).

American Draft Cards
The American draft card is just a registration card while Swedish cards serve a dual purpose in that they also contain service data the American doesn't have.
Enrollment Books
From 1885 an enrollment book (inskrivningsbok) was assigned to each draftee when they were enrolled. This enrollment book was the draftee’s personal belonging and had to be brought every time the draftee reported for duty. See an example of an Enrollment book for draftees from 1907
