At the time of recruitment the future recruit had to present a few certificates in order to be accepted as a recruit. One of these certificates was the parish minister's certificate. This was a certificate stating the person's characteristics. Further it contained information regarding his knowledge in Christianity etc. The parish minister issued the certificate. This certificate reads (free translation): The farmhand Johan Ersson at Wadstorp, living in this parish, was born on August 15, 1817 in Björkvik parish and has a satisfactory knowledge in Christianity, is known for a honourable living and has regularly taken salvation (?) and he is vaccinated. Attest: Björkvik August 7, 1838 Lundgren Assistant Parish Minister I'm not quite sure how to translate "nyttjat salighetsmedlen" but I guess that it means that he had been taken the Holy Communion regularly. The vaccination mentioned above is the vaccination for smallpox, which became compulsory in 1816. Johan Ersson: Johan Ersson was enrolled as a recruit on September 20, 1838 at rote Åsätter number 139, Björkvik parish, Södermanland province. He was accepted (approberad) as a soldier at the Södermanland regiment, Livkompaniet (Life Company) at the general muster held on June 15, 1839. He was assigned Johan Modig as his soldier's name.
